Frequently Asked Questions

Does a company exporting from outside the UK need this registration?
Registration is for businesses that sell, store, process, prepare or distribute food in Great Britain; this includes businesses that distribute or broker food from an office without keeping food on their premises. If you have no such operation in the UK, we clarify together in the consultation whether you have an obligation.
When must the registration be made?
At least 28 days before you start operating. That is why we ask you to share your plans for operating in the UK early.
Is there a government fee, and can the registration be refused?
Registration is free and cannot be refused. Our consulting fee covers preparing the registration details and following up.
What if we operate at more than one address?
A business operating at more than one location registers each premises separately with the local authority for that location. Premises in Scotland are registered under Food Standards Scotland rules.
